Walking the Path to Fitness & Health

Health is all we have. Money may make life a blast, but health, spiritual, physical and mental cannot be bought with money so my focus is on keeping myself healthty and active so I wont be a burden to others because of my lifestyle, food and activity choices.

So I Picked Up My …

Ex-Ray CD and the Radiologist’s Report last Friday, Nov 12th.  I wanted it so I could take it to the Rheumatologist.  Now the Orthopedic had said I had two meniscus tears, one on the outside of my right knee, and the other on the inside of my left knee.  I believed everyone with their diagnosis, Orthopedic, two meniscus tears, the Rheumatologist, my actual condition was worse than what the Ex-Ray shows, blah, blah, blah.  Well based on the Radiologist’s report, what each, Rheumatologist and Orthopedic, said I have I don’t have.  The only way one can see meniscus tears, or even the meniscus is with an MRI, which I didn’t have.  The Rheumatologist said both my leg bones were rubbing against each other, they are not.  It is my patella, kneecap, rubbing against my thigh bone, which can be mitigated by strengthening my quadriceps (Wii Fit/Plus) doesn’t have exercises for that.   Folks, make friends with someone from the Medical Community who can read medicaleze.

I’m not sure if all the subterfuge is due to an attempt to get me approved for Physical Therapy quicker (Orthopedic being the referring doctor), or the need to get a down payment, mortgage payment, etc by the Rheumatologist, who had suggested very expensive shots for both knees twice a year: Shots that can cost up to $1,500 dollars for a three shot procedure, times 2, for one knee alone.

The Trip Was Great and Worth It

Yesterday I was part of a fact finding group for a computer conversion we will be doing and hopefully completing in February of 2011.  I work for a 120 plus year old social service agency, taking care of people from the cradle to the grave.  We visited a sister agency about 2 hours south of New York City (South Jersey) who has been using the product for three years.  We had questions and they had great answers on how they use the reporting capabilities of the product, which I’m interested in because I’m in the Finance part.

I’m still dealing with the problem of my knees and looking for solutions in changing my exercise routines to not make them worse even though I’m not getting a lot of pain, and more than not, no pain.  May lack of pain and my flexibility and mobility may also be due to the supplements of Flax and Fish Oil, Ginger and Cinnamon which are kind of anti-inflammatory, although that was not why I began taking them.  What I don’t want to do is wear away any cartilage I have left and I’ve been given several options, the last would be knee replacements.  Kenny has told me about his wife’s bionic knees and that was very helpful, although I suspect when they fly, metal detectors go off.  I’m reading up on Synvisc Injections.  I’m going to try to contact some “medical” folks who are not in the pocket of drug companies (good luck to me).  I’ve had a procedure totally unrelated to what I’m going through now when I go a lot of negative feedback from many of my doctors, but doing research I decided to have it done.  It was the best thing I have done for my body, UAE.  I was one of the earliest women in the United States to have this procedure done, although it France it had become part of standard care for Uterine Fibroids.

My Fabulous Numbers (Fasting Blood Glucose) ...

Just took a hit.  See the thing with exercising and controlling Blood Glucose readings is keeping up with both Strength/Resistance & Aerobic/Endurance because each work different muscle group types and bring down Glucose numbers differently.  Because I’m laying off of the legs until my knees are healed, the large muscle groups in my lower body, are not getting worked as I would like.  Strength/Resistance training don’t impact glucose numbers immediately; in fact they usually raise the numbers first, short-term, but long term they impact numbers over several days: Whereas Aerobic/Endurance training impact glucose numbers immediately, and cease maximizing glucose utilization when you stop exercising.

Pancake Day ….

Which means Loooooong exercise session today to eliminate any glucose spikes (Do not try this unless under the supervision of a good endocrinologist and know how your body reacts) but I forgot to get my berries to go on top.  The New York Times published an article yesterday called, Protecting Yourself From the Cost of Type 2 Diabetes, for those interested.  Although a little more through then some of the other distorted and false information reported on and published by newspapers and magazines, this has some helpful hints on prevention.  But since there are a multitude of genetic variations, coupled with food and inactivity (drive everywhere, sitting at a desk, or in front of a computer/video game), there will never be a one-fit-all cure or remedy.

My ex runs marathons and/or race walks them, and developed Type II about four years ago so it ain’t the weight.  In fact if it was about weight, then all obese folks would be diabetic.  It is true that in the Type II diabetic population most folk are obese; however, in the obese population most folks are not Type II.   Before one comes down with Type II, something called Metabolic Syndrome, is usually working in the background and unknown unless specifically tested for it.    So the question becomes, is obesity triggered by Metabolic Syndrome, or does weight gain trigger Metabolic Syndrome?  For some folks, like my Ex, weight gain was not the trigger.
