Find your Target Heart Rate

The key to a proper wii fit workout is maintaining the proper heart rate. If you've heard of heart rate zones then you'll understand that there are different levels of heart rate and the body uses different nutrients according to how hard your heart is working. So the best way to get what you need out of your wii fit workout is by knowing what your target heart rate is at. Too low and you'll have to work a little harder, too high and you should slow down a little. Maintaining the proper heart rate through out your wii fit workout will greatly increase your results.

As we age our target heart rates change, but you can always calculate them based upon a few key pieces of information. First get your resting heart rate, to do this you must wait until after you haven't done anything strenuous for about 30 minutes take your pulse for 10 seconds and multiply this by 6. I've created a simple heart rate calculator program here that will tell you what your target heart zones are.

For warm-ups or for those of us that haven't workout in a while our target heart range should be about 50-60% of our maximum. This is a good level for beginning a new exercise routine, as it will get your heart pumping but will not strain you.

To burn calories at the optimum level for weight loss your heart rate should be around 60% to 70% of your maximum heart rate. This the that fat burning zone, our body uses most of the calories you burn from our stored fat when you exercise within this heart rate zone. If your heart goes much higher than this you will begin to use the calories stored in your muscles instead of the ones stored in your fat. Your Yoga Wii fit workouts should also be in about this range.

For endurance your target heart rate should remain at around 70-80% of your maximum heart rate. This gives the heart an excellent workout and increases the efficiency with which it moves blood through your body. This is a bit more difficult of a workout, but it is sustainable for longer periods of time.

For strength you should try to get your heart rate up to 80-90% of maximum for short periods of time. Each exercise should be followed by a period of rest for both the heart and your muscles. During a wii fit workout it may be harder to reach these levels, unless you use extra weights. If this is the case reaching 70-80% of your maximum heart rate will work just fine. Anything above this heart range and you should consider stopping or taking some time to relax until your heart settles down.

So remember when you generate a wii fit workout with our routine generator, keeping track of your heart rate is just as important as being consistent in your routine. They both will help you as you make your journey to a healthier you.
